Enjoy Beef and Eggs produced on land by the Pottery
There are free range chickens on site which will probably come and say hello! Our friendly cockerel is called Kevin.
We produce our own beef (rare breed Welsh Blacks). The cows are fed solely on grass and hay made from our fields and the meat is hung for over three weeks, which means it loses excess moisture, darkens and becomes tender. It is darker than the normal supermarket meat and is ‘marbled’. Our customers tell us that it tastes lovely!
There are usually eggs and beef available for you to buy if you wish.
Our Accommodation and Eco-Friendliness
We do our best to be eco-friendly. The Pottery holiday cottage was renovated in 2004 to a high standard using eco-friendly materials where possible. The timber used was from a sustainable source and the worktops are made from recycled yogurt pots! Water is direct from our own supply on the Longmynd and heating and hot water is via solar panels, weather permitting.
We own 18 acres of acid grassland next to the holiday cottage. To the best of our knowledge, neither chemical fertilisers nor insecticides have ever been used there and this is reflected in the fact that there are many rare plants. To preserve them we are committed to being on the Natural England Higher Lever Stewardship Scheme for at least ten years. Part of our agreement with them is that we keep cattle on the land. Cow manure both provides a natural fertiliser for the plants and also distributes the seeds to help the plants thrive. In turn the plants provide a great habitat for insects and therefore various bird and bat species too. So the beef production helps both to sustain a rare breed and also support the environment.
